how is hydrogen fuel produced? | |
Answers:
1You can do this in your own kitchen.
take a glass or plastic bowl filled with some salted water, put two metal objects (like forks) into two water glasses filled with water and turned upside down in the bowl.
next hook up wires to the forks (Wires with alligator clips are helpful here) and connect them to a *DC* power source. (any safe voltage below 24 v to start out- you could use a 12V car battery or a 9V radio battery). DON'T HOOK UP DIRECTLY TO THE WALL OUTLET! It's dangerous and it's AC, anyway.
as soon as the power is turned on, you should see bubbles forming on the forks (electrodes). After awhile you will collect enough gas in each glass to be able to tell that one has twice the volume as the other one. The one with higher volume is pure hydrogen. The other is pure oxygen. They come from the breakdown of the water.
To help this to work, make sure that there is a connection of water between the water in the two glasses, and that the water is salty. The electricity has to travel between the two electrodes.
When they do this commercially, naturally they use better electrodes, collecting tanks, and compressors; electricity can come from less polluting sources, like wind or water. Hydrogen is hard to seal and keep from leaking, as you can see with balloons- it leaks right out through the rubber in a day or two.
